A surprising announcement was made last month when NBA Commissioner Adam Silver and Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick partnered to create the first NBA 2K League. The eSports industry has been growing increasingly popular in recent years, and the NBA took notice.
With a tentative date set in 2018, the NBA 2k eLeague will consist of 30 teams, each operated by a real life NBA franchise. Each team will have 5 human players and will mirror the real NBA season. There will be a 5-month regular season, followed by playoffs, and then the championship match. The NBA will hold an initial draft of eSports players, and each NBA franchise will pick five to play as its eLeague team. They will draw salaries, train and essentially treat the NBA 2K eLeague as full-time jobs during the season.
