Lavar Ball has become one of the biggest names in sports, and he averaged 2 points in college. His outrageous claims have caused controversy, while also gaining popularity amongst many fans (and Demarcus Cousins). Some people say that Lavar is putting a target on Lonzo’s back with all the social media trash talk and insane statements he makes. Other people and players say that they wish they had a father like Lavar. Let’s analyze!
Lavar Is A Bad Father
A lot can be said about Lavar Ball being a bad parent. His bold claims put extremely high expectations on his sons. Some of the remarks he has made are: 1) His son is better than Steph Curry 2) Lonzo cannot learn from Steve Nash because he is more athletic and longer than Steve Nash 3) Lakers are going to make the playoffs this year.
While certainly showing confidence in his son’s ability, Lavar Ball has angered a lot of players in the league. John Wall, for instance, wants to show Lonzo “no mercy” and torture him for 48 minutes. In Lonzo’s first ever NBA game, Patrick Beverley gave Lonzo a warm “welcome” to the league thanks to the words of his father.

The remarks of Lavar Ball nearly cost Lonzo his shot of even playing for the Lakers. Before the draft, the Lakers had shown tremendous interest in Markelle Fultz, De’Aaron Fox, and Josh Jackson. Lonzo, on the other hand, came to the draft workout out of shape, and the off-court antics of his father gave an additional warning to the Laker staff. Luckily, Lavar confessed to Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka, saying that this entire thing was a marketing scheme to launch his business, Big Baller Brand.
Lavar Is A Good Parent
While Lavar has set lofty expectations and an obvious dislike towards his son by NBA players, his actions could be seen positively. Washington Wizards Head Coach Scott Brooks explained how he wished he had a parent like Lavar:
“You know what, hey, people talk about [Lonzo’s] dad all the time. Hey, I mean, my father left me at 2. I would love to have my father around like [LaVar] is around and talk to him and pump me up with confidence,” Brooks said. “To me, that’s every son’s dream. And for some reason he gets criticized. No question, he’s a little ambitious at times [with] what he says. But he’s around his son. I have no problem with that. And maybe he could temper it a little bit, but I would’ve loved to have my father do that.”
There are a lot of stories regarding NBA players growing up without a parent or even family. Take Jimmy Butler for example. In cases like this, people would have loved to have a parent like Lavar, who has nothing but great expectations and the utmost confidence for his son.
Additionally, the whole reason Lavar Ball started Big Baller Brand is to create a lifestyle where his family, and even there kids, won’t have any financial burden.
Whether or not Lavar Ball is a good parent is up to Lonzo and how he handles the pressure set from his father. However, one thing Lonzo knows is at the end of the day, his father is proud of him and will always support him
